THE FOLKLORE OF CHESHIRE'S HISTORIC BALLADS
During the nineteenth century, antiquarians travelled the countryside, gathering tales of legend, superstition, and history - capturing stories that might otherwise have been lost forever. For Cheshire, the premier collection published during the period was Ballads and Legends of Cheshire (1867) by Egerton Leigh, but its format of rhymes and songs can make the stories within somewhat elusive to the modern reader. Here, those stories have been carefully transposed into narrative prose, forming a collection that is genuinely indicative of the earliest Cheshire folklore.
